What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels dissolve dead or damaged skin cells with a special solution on your skin, which causes the visible layer to peel off. As your skin heals and begins to rejuvenate and repair itself, you should notice a clearer, smoother complexion. Without surgery, you can have a chemical peel to make your skin firmer, brighter, and younger. We provide multiple chemical peel options at the Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery (VIPS), including our popular and effective SkinMedica peels for the face, neck, and décollatage. We use only the finest, medical-grade chemical solutions (such as glycolic, salicylic, lactic, and trichloroacetic acids) for healthier, more radiant skin.

Variations of Chemical Peels

Our Port St. Lucie office provides medical-grade SkinMedica chemical peels (Illuminze, Vitalize, and Rejuvenize Peels) in varying strengths to fit our patients' skincare needs and goals.

Light Peels

You can have a light chemical peel on your lunch break and get back to your day. This strength of peel will remove the top layer of skin (the epidermis), giving your complexion a brighter appearance and softer texture. We suggest you get a light treatment around once a month for the most glowing results.

Medium-Depth Peels

This strength of chemical peel penetrates deeper into your skin. Because you may experience more discomfort, we recommend doing this treatment over a long weekend. Medium-depth peels are best for patients with mild to moderate skin damage, such as fine lines, wrinkles, superficial discoloration, and overall roughness.

Deep Peels

The most advanced of the three types of chemical peels is the deep peel treatment, requiring the most recovery time. This aggressive cosmetic treatment could leave your face itchy, swollen, and peeling for 10-12 days. Patients who receive a deep peel may have moderate to severe damage, such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, and deep discoloration.

What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

CO2 lasers are the gold standard in treating wrinkles, age spots, acne scars, and other blemishes, as well as firming skin and balancing tone. Damaged skin tissue is removed or ablated, stimulating new collagen production as heat energy is delivered. Depending on the depth of treatment, CO2 treatments can be accompanied by considerable downtime while damaged skin heals. Depending on aesthetic goals, skin condition, skin type, and the amount of downtime, Dr. Vinyard and the licensed laser technician at the Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery will choose the intensity of CO2 treatment best tailored for you.

CoolPeel

CoolPeel safely and comfortably delivers the benefits of a traditional CO2 resurfacing treatment, allowing patients to improve the overall appearance of their skin without the downtime of conventional deep CO2 treatments. By targeting the superficial layer of skin tissue, damaged skin is removed, revealing younger and healthier-looking skin.

Many advancements have been made to improve the side effects of CO2 treatments, but only the CoolPeel can deliver a fully ablative treatment without the downtime! There is minimal risk of hyperpigmentation, demarcation, or induced infection, making this one of the most advanced treatments at the Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery.

Savannah has been a great person to work with. I have had CoolPeels, IPL, and CoolSculpting at Vinyard, all with positive results for my appearance as well as my self-esteem. I have switched my products to those recommended and see a daily difference in my skin. I respect the opinions of everyone at Vinyard. They are so honest even when it takes money out of their pockets!! The entire team respects their clients and doesn’t try to sell something they don’t need or will not produce the desired outcome.

Who is a candidate for skin resurfacing?

Chemical peel candidates of both genders typically have noticeable problems in their skin, like scars, flaky skin, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, and much more. Skin type and tone play a role in selecting the most suitable laser, and the absence of active skin infections is essential. Non-smokers or those willing to quit for a specified period often experience better results, and candidates should be committed to diligent post-procedure care and follow-up appointments. Our team will suggest treatment options to fit your needs and goals.

Your Consultation

Receiving the suggestions of an aesthetic professional is the first step in the journey to healthier skin. A VIPS team member can assess your skin in a consultation in our Port Saint Lucie, FL, office before choosing the ideal chemical peel or laser resurfacing treatment to achieve your desired results. Good overall health is crucial for successful healing and recovery, and candidates should disclose any medical conditions during consultations.

What Is the Technique?

At your procedure at Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery, we will have you lying down in a relaxed position to administer your chemical peel or CO2 CoolPeel. For your chemical peel, we will ensure your skin is cleansed before applying the customized solution to your treatment areas. We will massage the solution onto your face and let it set for a specific amount of time, which will be discussed in your treatment planning session.

Before the laser procedure, your skin is thoroughly cleaned, and a topical numbing cream may be applied to minimize any discomfort during the treatment. The CoolPeel or deep CO2 laser is then carefully applied to the targeted areas of your skin. It emits precise and controlled microbeams of laser energy, which remove the outermost layer of damaged skin, stimulating collagen production and revealing healthier skin beneath. You are encouraged to bring a hat to wear outside after the procedure to protect your skin from environmental exposure.

What to Expect

Chemical Peel

Depending on the level of the peel you choose, you can expect the face to itch and peel from a few days to a couple of weeks. Dr. Vinyard or a member of his team will discuss methods to care for your skin during your consultation. Please keep in mind that no matter how much your skin itches during the post-treatment process, it is never helpful to pick the skin off. You could cause scarring to your delicate skin! If at any time you feel like you are having a reaction to your peel (excessive pain or fever), please call our office for assistance.

Laser Resurfacing

One of the main benefits of CoolPeel is that there is minimal downtime. You should expect to be a little red, as if you have a sunburn, for a day or two, but nothing should prevent you from returning to your normal daily activities. Your skin may feel dry and scaly as it heals, so it is vital to keep the skin hydrated. Dr. Vinyard and the certified laser technician at the Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery in Port St. Lucie, FL, will discuss the best post-treatment care and when you can return to your daily skincare regimen.

How much does skin resurfacing with a chemical peel or laser cost?

Dr. Vinyard will talk about your costs in your consultation after he has made your chemical peel or CO2 laser treatment plan. The price of a chemical peel can vary based on the level of chemical peel or intensity of the CO2 treatment required to help you meet your skin goals. It is essential to come in for a skin analysis with Dr. Vinyard and our medical aesthetician/laser technician. After designing a treatment plan, we can provide a customized quote for your procedure. VIPS accepts many payment methods, and you can ask about current specials or treatment packages.

What level should I choose for my chemical peel?

The best chemical peel for you will depend on your unique skin needs and cosmetic goals. During your consultation with Dr. Vinyard, he will help you select which peel suits your skin. Some factors you may consider are your overall health, your skin type, how deep you want the peel to work, how long you can spend in recovery, and what concerns you have about the appearance of your skin. It may be better for first-time patients to start with a lighter peel and see how you like the results. From there, you and Dr. Vinyard might tweak your plan to discover the best chemical peel level for your needs.

How do I maintain my results after my chemical peel?

By receiving regular facials from your Medical Aesthetician, your results from your chemical peel will be prolonged. We can recommend Medical-Grade skincare products as well. A great home skincare regimen is key to the longevity of your results.

Will my face hurt after a chemical peel?

Depending on the formula used, you may feel discomfort when it is on your skin. You may feel some stinging if you have a lighter peel, but it goes away quickly with a handheld fan. Medium and deep peels are suitable for deeper problems and offer results that last a long time, but they are typically more uncomfortable. During your treatment, a fan is used to help minimize the sensation of the peel and create a more comfortable experience. Dr. Vinyard or a team member will go over skin care after your chemical peel to extend your results.

Can I combine a chemical peel with other treatments?

For even more significant improvements to your skin, you may combine a chemical peel with another skin treatment at VIPS. During your consultation, be honest with Dr. Vinyard about your skin and cosmetic issues so he can create a personalized treatment plan to best address your goals. This may include injectable wrinkle treatments (like BOTOX or Juvéderm) along with your chemical peel to rejuvenate your aging facial appearance.

What is the difference between traditional CO2 laser treatments and CoolPeel?

Traditional CO2 laser treatments are typically accompanied by several days of intense downtime, which includes peeling, redness, dry skin, superficial crusting, possible oozing, and pinpoint bleeding. Downtime can range anywhere from 8 to 10 days, depending on the depth of treatment. CoolPeel, unlike traditional CO2 treatments, has the precision and control to deliver energy at the correct depth and speed for superficial skin resurfacing results without the lingering heat that traditionally damages the surrounding skin. The lack of necessary heat is where it gets its name and why patients don't experience intense downtime.

How many laser treatments do I need?

With traditional, deep CO2 treatments, typically only one treatment is needed. However, patients may see that more treatments are necessary with CoolPeel. With CoolPeel, though less downtime is expected per treatment, more treatments may be required to help you achieve your desired result.

How long will it take to see my desired results after CO2 laser skin resurfacing?

Typically, with treatments that stimulate collagen, such as CO2 laser skin resurfacing, results gradually improve between 3-6 months, with a slow progression of change to a more youthful appearance.
