Journey to Plastic Surgery

After becoming a general surgeon, Dr. Vinyard was accepted into a highly sought after plastic surgery residency at the University of California-Davis in Sacramento, CA. Under the guidance of the chief of plastic surgery, Dr. Thomas Stevenson, he received training in facial, breast, chest, upper and lower extremity, and abdominal wall reconstructions. He also honed his skills in skin cancer management and cosmetic surgery.

In addition, he received training in the repair of pediatric congenital abnormalities including cleft lip, cleft palate, and cranial synostosis. In 2008, he went on a mission trip with his pediatric plastic surgery mentor, Dr. Granger Wong, to Timor, Indonesia where they performed several cleft lip and palate surgeries at the Kupang Hospital and Trauma Centre. With the assistance of his Residency Program Director, Dr. Michael Wong, they developed a new photographic standard for imaging patients after massive weight loss. Dr. Vinyard presented their work at The California Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Rocky Mountain Association of Plastic Surgeons joint meeting in 2008 and was awarded the J.K. Hardesty Award for The Best Resident Paper. In 2009, Dr. Vinyard completed his required training and became a plastic surgeon. Dr. Vinyard spent the next year in an advanced breast and aesthetic surgery fellowship. Under the tutelage of Dr. Grotting, he learned the latest techniques in breast, body, and facial plastic surgery. Dr. Vinyard also studied Dr. Grotting's techniques in nonsurgical cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX Cosmetic and dermal filler injections, laser skin resurfacing, and skin care.

Education and Training

Dr. Vinyard continued his undergraduate education at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. During this time, he was awarded membership into the Golden Key National Honor Society. Knowing he wanted to pursue a surgical career, he felt it imperative to learn as much as he could about the Health Care profession. While keeping up with a full-time course schedule in Lawrence, KS, he made time to work as a Phlebotomist, an ECG technician and an Emergency Room Health Care Assistant at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, KS. Dr. Vinyard also offered tutoring for several classes that he attended. In 1997, he graduated with Departmental Honors in Human Biology.

He spent the next four years in medical school at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. In 1998, during his freshman year in medical school, he founded the Student Organization for Surgery. This organization was created by Dr. Vinyard to offer resources dedicated to the promotion of surgery as a career. Through this organization, he was able to develop several philanthropic events and a suture clinic that instructs hundreds of future physicians each year on the basics of proper suturing techniques. In 1999, he became a Volunteer Course Tutor in the Department of Physiology and Department of Anatomy and was nominated by his peers for the Student Leadership Award. In 2002, Dr. Vinyard was nominated for the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. When Dr. Vinyard received his Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, he was awarded the Dr. Thomas G. Orr Award for The Outstanding Student in Surgery.

There are several pathways in which one can become a Plastic Surgeon after medical school. Dr. Vinyard intentionally chose the longest and most thorough path. He spent the next five years of his life as a General Surgery Resident at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, KS. During that time, he received training in Trauma Surgery, Critical Care, Transplant Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Robotic Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Endoscopy, Acute Burn Management, and Surgical Oncology. He also became a Student Course Instructor and ultimately an Instructor Course Instructor for Advanced Trauma Life Support classes. Dr. Vinyard feels that this extensive prior training was invaluable to his Plastic Surgery Practice.

After becoming a General Surgeon in 2007, Dr. Vinyard was accepted into a highly sought-after Plastic Surgery Residency at the University of California-Davis in Sacramento, CA. It was there where he received training in Facial Reconstruction, Breast Reconstruction, Chest Wall Reconstruction, Abdominal Wall Reconstruction, Upper Extremity and Lower Extremity Reconstruction, Skin Cancer Management and Cosmetic Surgery. In addition, he received training in the repair of Pediatric Congenital Abnormalities including Cleft Lip, Cleft Palate, and Cranial Synostosis. In 2008, he went on a mission trip to Timor, Indonesia where he performed several cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries at the Kupang Hospital and Trauma Centre. With the assistance of his Residency Program Director, they developed a new photographic standard for imaging patients after massive weight loss. Dr. Vinyard presented their work at the California Society of Plastic Surgeons and the Rocky Mountain Association of Plastic Surgeons joint meeting in 2008 and was awarded the J.K. Hardesty Award for writing The Best Resident Paper. In 2009, Dr. Vinyard completed his required training and became a Plastic Surgeon.

Advanced Specialties

Although he had developed the surgical skills necessary to begin his plastic surgery practice, he still felt there was more that he could learn. With the desire to perfect his technical skills and surgical judgment in the area Cosmetic Plastic Surgery and Advanced Breast Reconstructive Surgery techniques, he sought additional training from a world-recognized leader in plastic surgery. In 2009, Dr. Vinyard moved to Birmingham, AL with his wife and two children. He spent the next year in an Advanced Breast and Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship. Under the tutelage of Dr. Grotting, he learned the latest techniques in Breast Reconstruction, Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction using the Superior-Pedicle Sculpted Pillar technique, treatment of Gynecomastia, Endoscopic Brow Lift, Facelift, Mini-Facelift, Rhinoplasty, Blepharoplasty, Otoplasty, Abdominoplasty, Brachioplasty, Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction, Lower Body Lift, and the nonsurgical cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX Cosmetic Injection, Dermal Filler Injections, Laser Facial Resurfacing and Skin Care Assessment/Management.

Professional Career

After completing his surgical training and advanced fellowships, Dr. Vinyard began his search for the right location to begin his plastic surgery practice and raise his children. He spent considerable time and effort in evaluating several options around the country.  By chance, he came across an opportunity in Lake Guntersville, AL. Although, neither he nor his wife grew up in a small town, they fell in love with the friendly family-oriented nature of the town’s people and the peaceful beauty the lake environment provides. Ever since Dr. Vinyard was drawn to the field of plastic surgery, he has been planning his future practice. This joint opportunity with Marshall Medical Centers allowed him to start a Plastic Surgery Program from the ground up. It had always been a dream for Dr. Vinyard to create a practice that caters to his patients’ needs and desires and ultimately exceed their expectations. The beauty and privacy that surrounds Lake Guntersville was a perfect match for Dr. Vinyard’s practice, the Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery. With the shared goal of bringing Plastic Surgery Services to Marshall County and Marshall Medical Centers, Dr. Vinyard opened the practice in 2010 where he designed and built an AAAASF-accredited Surgical Center. He became board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery on his first attempt. He also became a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (SESPRS). Although the practice was growing, the population size was not large enough to support a plastic surgery practice long term.

It had been a lifelong dream of Dr. Vinyard’s to live near the warm Atlantic Ocean and pursue his other passion of scuba diving and underwater photography. Both Dr. Vinyard and his wife are currently Rescue Diver Certified and have their sights on becoming master scuba divers. Their two children have also become Open Water Certified Scuba divers as well. Living near the ocean allows their family to share their love for the ocean and its marine life. In 2014, Dr. Vinyard was honored to have the opportunity to relocate to Palm Beach County and join the group of plastic surgeons at Plastic Surgery of Palm Beach. Dr. Vinyard brought his Midwestern-friendly personality with his technical skills and advanced techniques to build an amazing reputation in South Florida by providing compassionate patient care and delivering beautiful results.

In 2018, Dr. Vinyard made the decision to go back to a solo practice so that he could recreate the VIPS Experience in South Florida. His goal is to elevate cosmetic plastic surgery to a new standard by creating exceptional results through an experience that exceeds his patient’s desires. The Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery (VIPS), where the EXPERIENCE can be as great as the RESULTS, opened in November of 2018 with every detail designed by Dr. Vinyard with the patient’s comfort, privacy and convenience in mind. The office décor is a unique combination of modern simplicity with a comfortable, laidback, coastal feel. The advanced technology he incorporated into his practice helps to bring back the sacred patient-physician relationship that has too often been lost in today’s high volume practices. Dr. Vinyard was able to share with his patients the love he has for the ocean and passion for scuba diving by adding an underwater art gallery into his practice. As you walk through his office, you hear the calming sound of the VIPS fountain while viewing the beauty of the underwater marine life and it gives you a glimpse of the surreal experience of scuba diving.

The amazing VIPS team caters to our patient’s needs and is always available to answer your questions. At the Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery, we know that you have several options to choose from when deciding on the right surgeon to perform your transformation. We hope that you give our practice the opportunity to meet you and share our VIPS Experience. Once you meet Dr. Vinyard, we are confident you will quickly recognize why so many patients have trusted him to perform the transformation that inspired their confidence. We would love for you to join the Vinyard-VIPS Family!

"Dr. William J. Vinyard and the staff at Vinyard Institute of plastic surgery are the absolute BEST!!! Dr. Vinyard did an amazing job on my tummy tuck, breast augmentation with implants. The staff is amazing and was available anytime I had a question or concern (and I mean anytime, day or night and holidays), they always made me feel comfortable and ensured me that the changes I was feeling or happening were all normal. I'm completely obsessed with my new look and LOVE to tell everyone and anyone who ask's what I had done and who did it... I am 47 and haven't felt this confident about myself since I was in my teens. Thank you to Dr. William J. Vinyard and staff for giving me my confidence back. Joy S."

"One week post surgery mark, and I couldn’t be more delighted - Hi! I’m 68 years old! After a lifetime of being big busted and not loving my silhouette, I gave myself a wonderful gift- a breast reduction and lift by Dr Vinyard. Dr V is a popular plastic surgeon in Port St Lucie, Fla.Today is my one week post surgery mark, and I couldn’t be more delighted. I was a 38DDD and now I’m somewhere around a C cup! I went from looking like a granny to looking like a college girl! I can see my torso, which was hidden from sight for the past 50 years! I look so much slimmer, and my petite frame is now revealed! Hallelujah!"

He is a wonderful doctor, sincere & soft spoken, honest, caring and great at what he does! His staff led by Surgery nurse Mary Louise is fantastic! They are all very kind and extremely attentive. I feel very welcomed and valued by each of them. I asked early on if the doctor had other patients in my age bracket. They said yes, but the truth is that I didn’t see their B/ A’s because they didn’t want their pics to be public. I am sharing purposefully because I hope to inspire other women that it IS NEVER TOO LATE to manifest your lifelong dreams! The satisfaction is equally satisfying at 68 as it would have been at 38. I’m so proud of myself for having done it! Also, there is not a high level of pain after the surgery, rather a degree of soreness. I was able to just use extra strength Tylenol gel caps (1) every 6 hrs for the first 4 days. No opioids! I will update every couple of weeks for the first 6 weeks until I’m considered on the road to being healed. Stay tuned!"

I’m experiencing a small ( tiny) wound under each breast where the stitches are sown to my rib cage. This is very common and I’m told not to be concerned. I wash the area 4x per day and I’m trying to remain inactive as the doctor suggested... which is NOT easy with 4 dogs! My breasts are still swollen so they appear a bit fuller than they will be when they are fully healed over the course of 6+ months. Mt perception is that the breasts are HALF THE SIZE they were before. It’s a surreal experience to see them so high and firm, and to see my torso. I can see my belly button! This continues to amaze me! I’m excited to see how this journey evolves. :-) Dr V seems pleased and is very complimentary. He’s a wonderful doctor, and his staff couldn’t be sweeter and more supportive! It’s been a great experience so far."
