Choosing a cosmetic surgery procedure isn’t usually a challenge — most people know what they want from the start. Whether it be a facelift, tummy tuck, mommy makeover, skin treatments, fillers, breast augmentation, etc., most patients have been dreaming about their desired procedures and are ready for results. However, choosing the right plastic surgeon is critical to ensuring those dreamy results. So how can you know whether the plastic surgeon you’re looking at is right for you? Today, we’ll review some red flags that should warn you to keep away and help you choose the right plastic surgeon!

DON’T Ignore Certifications

A friend recommended her plastic surgeon to you — her results look great, so you decided to check it out. However, on the surgeon’s website, you don’t see much about certifications. But the reviews seem great, so you might as well give it a try, right? No! Your plastic surgeon should be certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. Because the government does NOT require a surgeon to be specifically trained in procedures they offer, some doctors add cosmetic surgery onto their repertoire without any training at all, just because they can. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is dedicated to making sure doctors are adequately trained, educated, and qualified to perform plastic surgery. If a plastic surgeon is not certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, keep searching for plastic surgeons, even if the reviews seem positive. It is always better to find someone formally educated and thoroughly experienced in their field if you want the best and safest results.

DON’T Ignore Facility Accreditation

The doctor may be accredited, educated, and talented, but is the operating facility and the anesthetist? To ensure the safest environment possible for you during your surgery, you’ll want to make sure that your surgeon’s facility has either AAAASF, AAAHC, JCAHO, IMQ operating facility certifications, or another accrediting body that is approved by the state medical board. Additionally, you’ll want a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) or a Board Certified Anesthesiologist during your procedure as well. If the plastic surgeon’s website doesn’t have this information, feel free to ask them. After all, these are all things your plastic surgeon should have — so if they don’t, it’s a red flag!

DON’T Fall For Cheap Tricks & Deals

As you’re researching plastic surgeons, you’re going to find some that offer significantly less expensive procedures than others — deals that will seem too good to be true. While other doctors are offering “X” surgery for thousands of dollars, this guy has it discounted to hundreds. While the frugal part of you may be excited, please don’t fall for it! With cosmetic surgery, you want to pay for quality care, trustworthy materials, educated doctors, and the best of results. All of these things will cost a pretty penny — but it will be worth it! After all, you’re paying for your body, where quality is more important than anything. Of course, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to save some cash, but finding an unreasonably good deal versus a reasonable discount is very different. As you search for a good plastic surgeon, keep high standards, safety, care, and results in the forefront of your mind — don’t let suspiciously good deals woo you away from quality.

DON’T Ignore Aesthetics

There are many talented, qualified, experienced plastic surgeons to choose from. You may find many incredible plastic surgeons in your area who check every box when it comes to quality. So how can you narrow it down from there? Like most fields, cosmetic surgery is an art form. Every doctor will have a different aesthetic when it comes to their procedures. Make sure you become familiar with the style and look of each surgeon so that you can understand what you want. One doctor’s aesthetic may be the “Hollywood” look, whereas another doctor’s may be the “natural” look. One may focus more on one ethnicity, whereas another is more specialized in a different one. One doctor may specialize in anti-aging, whereas another crafts physique. Look at before-and-after photos to better grasp the doctor’s aesthetic and whether you like it. Compare their previous patients to your own build, and see whether their results are similar to what you’re hoping for. You have a much higher chance of loving your results if you love the artistic eye of the surgeon you’re choosing.

DON’T Ignore Customer Service

You found a great plastic surgeon, you love his aesthetics, and he has all the qualifications. But during your consultation, things felt off — you two didn’t quite get along; he seemed distracted and even slightly annoyed at times. And the receptionist was cold too. But that’s something easy to look over, right? Wrong! Your plastic surgeon and their team are people you want to feel comfortable with. You want to be able to share your desires, goals, concerns openly before the surgery and then share your recovery, progress, and milestones after. If you feel uncomfortable, then look elsewhere. Additionally, if customer service is a hassle, challenging to get a hold of, vague, or just plain unhelpful, you’ll want to find another surgeon. Your surgeon should be helpful, upfront, kind, understanding, and prioritize your experience.
