BOTOX is one of the most tried-and-true anti-aging treatments available. In fact, over the past decade, 4-7 million BOTOX injections have been administered every year — and with the pandemic over, that number is expected to be even higher in 2022.

For some, BOTOX is a powerful aging preventative. People in their late 20s are flocking to BOTOX to prevent aging. For others, BOTOX is one of the best anti-aging tools able to smooth existing wrinkles and take years off your appearance. For those who fall into the latter category, one of the most common questions we get asked is, “How many units of BOTOX should I get to eliminate my wrinkles?” If you’re curious to know the answer, keep reading!

Which Parts of the Face Can BOTOX Treat?

BOTOX is one of the most time-tested wrinkle relaxer injectables to treat the effects of aging. One of the best parts about BOTOX treatments is how many parts of the face it can treat. This includes:

  • Forehead lines
  • Glabellar Lines (between the eyes, also referred to as the “11’s”)
  • Crow’s Feet (i.e., at the corners of the eyes)
  • Frown Lines
  • Smokers Lines / Lipstick Lines (i.e., lines on the upper lip)
  • Neck Bands
  • Sagging Brows
  • Masseter Muscles (jaw) (this can help slim or contour the face)

While BOTOX can treat all these areas, William J. Vinyard, MD, FACS, has found certain areas of the face where BOTOX truly shines. In his art, BOTOX is ideal for treating the upper half of the face (i.e., forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet), as those wrinkles are more dynamic and can most benefit from wrinkle relaxers.

How Many Units Are Used per Face Part?

While BOTOX can target each of the aforementioned individual parts of the face, it’s more common to treat groups of the face. For anti-aging, Dr. Vinyard treats three main areas for a full-face makeover:

  • Forehead
  • Crow’s Feet
  • Glabella (i.e., “11’s”)

These can be treated by group, or all together. Dr. Vinyard uses approximately 20 units per area depending on a patient’s anatomy and aesthetic preferences.

What if I Want All My Wrinkles Treated?

If you’re looking for a full-face makeover, then Dr. Vinyard can treat all three areas of the face, which is often termed “full correction.” In Dr. Vinyard’s decades of education and experience, he’s discovered that treating these three areas produces the most natural anti-aging results. As you can probably figure, treating all three areas typically requires around 60 units of BOTOX. This provides full facial correction and full-face wrinkle elimination.

What about the Lower Part of My Face?

If you have other facial areas you’d like addressed, such as the lower part of the face, Dr. Vinyard often uses other injectables (like Juvéderm) to produce the most natural-looking results. While BOTOX can be used on the lower part of the face as well, other injectables are generally better equipped and specifically engineered to address the bottom half of the face and may include areas such as cheeks, jawline, chin, and lips.

Dr. Vinyard would love to create a personalized “liquid” facial makeover just for you. This can include using other injectables to tone, contour, plump and rejuvenate the face. Some of the other most popular cosmetic treatments paired with BOTOX are:

  • Juvéderm and Restylane: These dermal fillers add volume and can help smooth skin.
  • Dysport and Xeomin: Like BOTOX, these are injectable wrinkle relaxers. Dr. Vinyard will discuss these with you if applicable to your makeover.
  • Laser Treatments and Radiofrequency Microneedling: When coupled with BOTOX and filler, these facial treatments can improve skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles, and address pigmentation issues.
  • And More: During your consultation, Dr. Vinyard will carefully listen to your goals and decide whether any other injectables or treatments available here at VIPS can help you achieve your anti-aging goals.

How Long Will My Results Last?

BOTOX results generally last three to four months before they need a refresher. Most patients book per season, but others find that their results can last even longer than four months. Depending on your BOTOX goals and the way in which your body responds to it, Dr. Vinyard can estimate how often you need to come into the office for maintenance.
