Everyone wants to look like their genuine selves, but when wrinkles and fine lines begin to make a statement on your face, it’s easy to feel like you’ve lost your natural and youthful appearance. Whether you think you have to limit your facial expressions or stop smiling to keep the lines from showing, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon William J. Vinyard, MD, FACS, and his team of experts are here to offer you the perfect solution to help you rediscover your youthful look — BOTOX!

At our Port St. Lucie office, Dr. Vinyard uses BOTOX treatments to erase wrinkles and fine lines like magic. But how long do these results last, and how can patients prolong their longevity?

What Is BOTOX?

A beloved cosmetic injectable throughout the world, BOTOX is a purified strain of botulinum toxin (type A) from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. This toxin inhibits muscle contraction by blocking signals from the nerves to the tissue and muscles. Since your muscles won’t contract anymore, your skin will relax and prevent the facial expressions that create frown lines and other undesirable facial wrinkles.

BOTOX is not just a cosmetic treatment, however. Many patients receive BOTOX to treat medical issues such as:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Eyelid spasms
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Excessive sweating
  • Overactive bladder
  • Cervical dystonia

BOTOX injections and their longevity are not just relevant for cosmetic purposes — they are also essential for medical concerns. That is why it’s important to understand how BOTOX injections work before committing to a treatment plan.

How Do BOTOX Injections Work?

When BOTOX inhibits your muscles from contracting, your skin stops scrunching, preventing new lines from being created. In addition, old lines will be able to relax due to a lack of muscle movement.

But how does it actually prevent muscle and tissue movement? Essentially, BOTOX attaches itself to nerve endings, impeding the communication between nerves and facial muscles. Because the nerves can no longer signal the brain to move, your muscles stop contracting, leading to muscle atrophy. However, BOTOX injections are not permanent. Your nerves will continue to grow new endings, causing the injections to wear off.

What Is the BOTOX Injection Appointment Like?

You can expect a brief consultation before receiving your actual BOTOX injections. During this consultation, Dr. Vinyard or one of his aesthetic experts, will discuss your desired outcome before having you perform a few facial expressions. After this step, he and his team will cleanse your skin and inject the BOTOX treatment, followed by a cold compress to reduce swelling. The actual injections take, at most, 10-15 minutes.

We recommend that you follow Dr. Vinyard’s instructions after your procedure to boost the efficacy of your treatment. He will ask you to avoid laying down for several hours after your treatment, strenuous exercise, alcohol, massaging the area, or applying heat to the area for a full 24 hours. These cautions will ensure that the BOTOX is contained in the injection site.

When Will My BOTOX Results Start To Appear?

Most patients will notice results in 7 to 10 days after the procedure, with full treatment being evident in 14 days.

How Long Does BOTOX Last On Average?

BOTOX lasts somewhere between 3-4 months. The longevity of your results depends on various factors, like age, sex, muscle mass, injection technique, dilution of toxin, and the injection site. Additional factors like skin elasticity, wrinkle depth, and metabolism can also impact the longevity of your BOTOX results.

How Often Should I Get BOTOX Injections?

Some studies have shown that repeated treatment sessions can prolong your BOTOX results even in larger muscles, where it tends not to last as long. Scheduling a treatment session every 3-4 months should give you a consistent youthful aesthetic while slowly extending the lifetime of your results. After several injections, some patients may find that their BOTOX can last up to six months!

Tips for Improving BOTOX Result Longevity

Everyone wants to enjoy the maximum benefit of their BOTOX injections for the maximum amount of time. Unfortunately, over time, the effects of your treatment will disappear due the formation of neurotransmitters and return of nerve signals to the muscles. While maintenance treatments are the best way to upkeep your BOTOX results, there are several things you can do between procedures to keep them fresh:

  1. Avoid sun exposure: Because BOTOX interacts mainly with the muscles in your body and not with your skin, sun damage will cause your actual skin to wrinkle and crease, something BOTOX cannot fix. By wearing SPF and sunglasses, you can keep these sun-related wrinkles away.
  2. Find a good skin care regimen: Keeping your skin moist and filled with collagen and hyaluronic acid is a great way to add glow to your BOTOX results!
  3. Avoid nicotine: Not only is nicotine a common cause of skin disease and wrinkles, but it also breaks down collagen and damages skin cells, thus working against your BOTOX treatment.

With these simple steps, maintaining your appearance post-procedure will be a breeze. You can slow down the aging process and prevent those annoying dynamic wrinkles from returning faster by making a few simple adjustments.

How About Dysport? How Long Does Dysport Last?

One popular alternative to BOTOX, Dysport, frequently gets patients’ attention. Both use botulinum toxin, so what is the difference between the two?

The differences between BOTOX and Dysport are minimal. Dysport typically lasts 3-4 months, just like BOTOX, and its results appear around the same time as BOTOX’s. The only notable difference between the two is the treatment area. Dysport has had success treating smaller, more localized areas when compared with BOTOX.
