What is Rhinoplasty?

Your goal of an aesthetically-pleasing nose can be accomplished with the help of the board-certified cosmetic plastic surgeon, Dr. William Vinyard. He can change the look and shape of your nose with a surgery to meet your specific needs. At his private practice in Port Saint Lucie, FL, Dr. Vinyard can design a rhinoplasty plan of action to alter the structure and appearance of your nose by reducing a dorsal hump, altering the shape and projection of the tip, changing the width of the nostrils, or by modifying the angle between the nose and upper lip. Rhinoplasty can also be performed to help correct nasal injuries and birth defects. Nose reshaping procedures can involve treating one or multiple parts of your nose depending upon its shape. Results can range from a small refinement of the nasal shape to a dramatic change in facial appearance depending upon your specific needs and desires.

Dr. Vinyard will perform a facial and nasal analysis. He will review your facial structure and perform a physical exam before discussing your options. Dr. Vinyard will explain his recommended treatment plan with you and answer all of your questions regarding rhinoplasty. Together, we will visualize your end results after nose surgery at Vinyard Institute of Plastic Surgery.

We ask that any patient seeking cosmetic nose surgery at VIPS be an adult or teenagers (age 16 and up). Facial growth needs to be complete to get the best results. Please allow an hour and a half for your rhinoplasty consultation to see if you are an ideal candidate for rhinoplasty. This is a vital part of your journey with us. Consider this experience with Dr. Vinyard as a time that you are dedicating to yourself. If you find yourself frustrated with the appearance of your nose and have distinct issues you hope to improve, enhance, or correct, this procedure may be the recommended course of action. It is important that realistic expectations are discussed like your nose and facial profile only be revised as your natural facial structure allows. You may have photos with you of what you would like your nose to look like, however, we want you to have realistic expectations. All of this will be addressed during your consultation, especially for adolescents. Dr. Vinyard will ask you questions about your health, medical history, medications you are currently taking, and how you envision your nose to look with plastic surgery.

What's the Technique?

There are many approaches to nose reshaping surgery (rhinoplasty). Just as the appearance of everyone's nose is different, there are just as many ways to correct the area(s) of concern. Depending upon the type of procedure that Dr. Vinyard recommends for you, your rhinoplasty procedure can last from 1 – 4 hours under a general anesthesia. He will be able to advise you on the length of surgery at the end of your consultation once he has decided what will be necessary to achieve the look that you desire.

Dr. Vinyard performs nose surgery with either an open or closed (endonasal) approach. The goal of the procedure is to decrease or eliminate excess bone, cartilage, and tissue, or to improve and add cartilage if necessary for reconstruction. The nose is repositioned while the skin is draped over the newly structured framework. Sutures are positioned either inside the nose or within the natural external crease. You will be discharged from our care to stay in the comfort of your own home with a responsible adult.

What can i Expect?

Upon completion of your cosmetic nose surgery, you will rest comfortably in the recovery section, and then be released to heal at home. The nose and the surrounding area will be swollen, bruised, and sore for the first few days. In most cases, there is some discoloration under the eyes as well. Consistently using cold compresses and inflammatory medications can help with these effects. Your post-op check-up with Dr. Vinyard will take place within 48 – 72 hours following surgery to check your healing process. It takes about 2 – 4 weeks to look normal following rhinoplasty. During this timeframe, strenuous exertion should be avoided.

Recovery from a rhinoplasty varies from person to person. You will experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising during the first couple weeks after surgery. You will be required to avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for about 2 – 3 weeks. You may return to normal activities within  4 – 6 weeks. Bruising after a rhinoplasty usually lasts 10 – 14 days but can persist for up to three weeks. You may experience some bruising underneath the eyes as well. One week after your rhinoplasty, most of the bruising can be covered with a camouflaging concealer. We can recommend some brands of concealer during your post-operative visits that are effective with the type of coverage needed. The final result can be seen a year after rhinoplasty surgery with it being very close to the final result at three months. The nose will continue to change throughout your lifespan regardless of whether it has been surgically altered or not.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does rhinoplasty cost?
Just as every nose is different, so are the different types of surgeries that can be employed to help correct patient concerns.  During your consultation, you will receive Dr. Vinyard's undivided attention as he creates a plan of care specific to your needs and desires. Your out-of-pocket costs will depend upon the extent of correction that you require and how long it will take in the surgery. You will be given a written quote at the end of your consultation that will detail the associated costs. Since a rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure, the total cost of the procedure is due two weeks in advance. The first 50% of the total cost is due one month in advance of your surgery. Dr. Vinyard's professional fee, anesthesia fees, facility fees, and a nasal splint are included. The consultation fee, pre-op visit, and all follow-up appointments are included in his professional fee.
Our VIPS practice participates with CareCredit. However, we do not directly finance any procedures. You may also want to research options through your bank of choice. We also accept all major credit cards including VISA, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.

Will my insurance cover functional nose surgery?
A rhinoplasty is considered a cosmetic procedure. While rhinoplasty enhances your appearance, it is not covered by insurance. If your nose reshaping surgery is considered medically necessary to fix your nasal airways for breathing (deviated septum), some of your costs may be covered by insurance. If you are considering using your insurance, please tell Dr. Vinyard during your consultation. Our office will help you submit the needed paperwork and information to your insurance to process your claim.

Are there nonsurgical options to change my nose?
To smooth lumps and bumps on your nose, a wrinkle filler (like Juvéderm or Restylane) may be an option. An injectable filler can temporarily correct minor imperfections on your nose, which may help you decide to proceed with rhinoplasty. Nose surgery is better for long-lasting results, larger changes, and to improve the internal structure for better function. During your consultation, Dr. Vinyard will let you know if you may be a candidate for nonsurgical nose reshaping.

What about ethnic rhinoplasty?
Ethnic rhinoplasty focuses on improving the nose while still maintaining your cultural identity. This may be a consideration if you are Asian, African-American, or Middle Eastern. During your consultation with Dr. Vinyard, you can discuss what you like about your nose and what you would like to change. This will allow him to customize your treatment plan so you get your best results.

Can I combine nose surgery with other facial surgeries?
Many patients consider combining nose surgery with another procedure, like chin or cheek augmentation. Combining surgeries for a dramatic result can be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Vinyard. Once he understands your goals, he can help you decide what procedures should be in your treatment plan. Nose reshaping surgery can help your whole face look more balanced, so you should wait to see your results before considering another procedure. Rhinoplasty is commonly combined with other surgeries of the face such as a chin implant or micro-liposuction of the chin or jowls to help create better facial balance.
